GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – While Super Bowl Sunday is one many enjoy, it can also be devastating for people that gamble too much and lose.
The Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling says it is just another game to bet on, but Executive Director Rose Blozinski points out why many put a lot on the line.
“It is kind of the make-it or break-it and it is the last time,” said Blozinski.
“If you are the gambling kind you probably have had a losing season because it is always about the next bet.”
Blozinski adds that compulsive gamblers are willing to risk a lot to even out the score.
“At that point, you see this as, okay I have to put everything I can on the line and try to recoup this is kind of the mindset.”
She says sports betting has become more common and advancements in technology is one key reason.
“Before you might have had to go someplace but now it is at the tip of your fingers. It is also much easier and people don’t even have to know you are doing it.”
The Wisconsin Council on Problem Gambling recommends some advice for those who are willing to put some money on the line.
“Don’t take the bill money, take the money that has been set aside for entertainment and don’t go beyond that.”
It is also important to understand that your chances of winning are slim.
The Council advises people watch for signs of problem gambling. Blozinski says spending more than you usually do, borrowing money to gamble or being willing to risk something of value are signs that a gambler may need to get some help.
It is also important to note that the Super Bowl offers more than just betting on the winning team. Prop bets are also made available that can give people a chance to bet on things like how long the National Anthem will be, what the first song of the halftime performance will be and what color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach.
