GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An elementary school in Green Bay is making a difference.
Students and staff at Kennedy Elementary School are working to raise money for a fellow classmate to fully enjoy recess.
Hushe Lor is a student with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a genetic disorder that is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness. This is caused by alterations in a protein called dystrophin that is not able to keep muscle cells intact over time.
Recess is the third-grader’s favorite time of day, but it has become difficult for him to navigate the playground.
Kennedy Elementary School is selling one-dollar bracelets as a part of a service leadership project that aims to bring awareness to Hushe’s condition.
Proceeds from the bracelets will go toward purchasing a vehicle for Hushe to use.
“We wanted to provide him with some opportunities to enjoy recess, especially in the winter. So we came up with the idea to sell bracelets that say Wheels for Hushe,” said principal Trisha Smet.
Organizers explain that they have surpassed the original fundraising goal of selling 400 bracelets. The school continues to order more bands to meet the support it is receiving.
Students have created flags to wave during a special parade the school will have once Hushe receives his car.
Bracelets are being sold at the Kennedy Elementary Main Office for those who wish to donate to the cause.
