GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Employment scams were the riskiest scams in 2018, according to the latest report from the Better Business Bureau.
Employment scams hit targets of all ages and all demographics.
“Equally by men and women, by military families, veterans and even students.
Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau says Amazon’s search for a new headquarters opened the door for scam artists to work many.
“Their tactic was to send out work from home offers claiming to be from Amazon, which made perfect sense it was very believable.
Online Purchases was the second riskiest scam on the list. Bach says that is because many people shop online.
“What we noticed is those younger people who are tech-savvy and probably shop online a lot, they fell for online purchase scams quite often.”
Online purchase scams dropped from the top spot recently.
“It was only number two on our list because when people did lose money, it was not as much as other scams.”
Fake checks, Home Improvement, and Advance Fee Loans round out the top five.
Bach warns consumers to look out, early spring is when Home Improvement scams hit their peak.
