HOBART, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – It’s still unclear why a police officer’s gun went off, injuring him during a traffic stop last week.
Hobart-Lawrence police said Tuesday that police officer Samuel Schroeder is expected to make a full recovery after having surgery last Thursday.
Schroeder was shot in the hip when his gun fired during the traffic stop last Wednesday on Highway 29 in Hobart. Police had been asked to do a welfare check on the man, and a standoff followed, closing the highway for part of the afternoon.
“The internal review process is still ongoing. The initial review did not produce a conclusive answer to definitively identify the cause of the discharge,” Capt. Michael Renkas of the Hobart-Lawrence Police Dept. said in a statement.
“Nevertheless, I can state the firearm was not in the holster when the firearm was discharged. At this time, there is no timetable for when the final review will be completed. The continuing review will consist of inspecting and testing the firearm as well as the holster.”
Police say the gun was a Sig Sauer brand. Law enforcement agencies around the country have filed lawsuits against the company, alleging guns fire without the triggers being pulled. The company says its guns have safety mechanisms preventing accidental discharges.
Schroeder is a seven-year veteran of the force.
