DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) – The annual spring survey of the Fox River muskie population took place on Thursday by Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources biologists.
Muskellunge, or Muskie, is not only the state fish, but also is native to the Green Bay watershed.
The survey includes capturing, measuring, weighing, and tagging the fish.
According to biologists, eggs are also collected to be reared at an area hatchery for a future release.
“They haven’t been able to really reproduce and maintain the population on their own, so we’re here spawning the fish, so that we can get enough fish out there so that they do spawn on their own,” explains fisheries technician, Mike Baumgartner.
Memorial Day weekend is the start of open season for muskie fishing, which extends through November 30.
