APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A psychiatric review has found that a mother accused of sexually assaulting her children understood the law and appropriateness of her alleged actions.
The 34-year-old Grand Chute mother, who’s not being named in order to protect the victims, faces eight charges, including sexual assault and sexual exploitation.
Previously, she had pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
The report did not support the mental disease claim and the psychiatric report determined she had the capacity to appreciate the wrongfulness of her actions and had the ability to conform to the requirements of the law when the offenses allegedly occurred.
Court records show that the defense did not challenge the findings.
According to court records, the case remains scheduled for trial starting August 21, but may settle before that.
The woman allegedly sexually assaulted her two children — a boy, 7, and a daughter, 6 — during the course of several months, according to prosecutors and the criminal complaint.
The allegations also include charges that she posted sexually explicit online images and videos.
The woman was previously found competent to stand trial, meaning that she understands the charges and can assist in her defense.
