GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With the Fourth of July falling on a Thursday this year, many people were given an extra long weekend. The Fourth of July holiday has now come and gone, but for some families, the fun isn’t over.
“We’ve been out here since Wednesday night,” said Heather Mommarts. “So we enjoy camping out here and hanging out, playing cards, we went to the beach and watched some fireworks.”
Mommarts said she used her extra long weekend to spend some quality time with her kids, something she doesn’t always have the chance to do back home.
“It’s been fun to just sit back and relax with my family, away from the distractions,” said her daughter Mckenna Mommarts.
The Mommarts’ weren’t the only ones with the idea of spending quality time, dozens of families could also be found enjoying the splash pad in Downtown Green Bay.
“I felt like it was better to take the girls out and give them some dad time instead of taking an extra day at work,” said Tyler Besaw.
While some people used the extra time to spend with their families, others took advantage of the holiday business.
“You can’t ignore the crowd on the boardwalk especially with the Fourth of July and everyone having off this Friday and into the weekend so it made sense,” said Matt Fischer.
Fischer is the store manager at BrokenSpoke Bike Studio, one of the few places in the Downtown Area that remained open on the 4th and 5th of July.
“The weather is directly tied to the amount of activity outside and I think the boardwalk which is tied to our business has seen an increase in activity, and consequently so have we,” said Fischer.
