BELLEVUE, WI (WTAQ) – Heavy traffic, spring flooding, and time, have combined to wreak havoc on an area road, which is now having its pavement replaced.
According to Brown County Public Works, work on County Highway GV (Monroe Road) from Hoffman Road to the WIS 172 eastbound ramps in the Village of Bellevue will start today.
Brown County Public Works Director Paul Fontecchio says it’s an important stretch of roadway.
“It’s very heavily traveled, there are over 20,000 cars per day that travel that road,” explains Fontecchio. “The [Brown County] Sheriff’s Officer is over there, but there’s also a number of businesses.”
His department has determined that stretch of roadway is in particularly bad shape and work can’t wait any longer.
“It’s like the roads were aged in dog years or something,” he says.
The project has an anticipated end date of September 13, 2019, and during that time motorists will notice a difference.
“Right now it’s a four-lane road, two lanes in each direction,” he explains. “Traffic will move to one lane in each direction.”
Crews will be taking out asphalt and replacing it with concrete.
“The curb and gutter are actually in really good shape,” says Fontecchio. “So we’re just literally taking the old pavement out and putting in new pavement.”
One lane of traffic will be open in each direction and people will also be able to access local businesses.
According to Brown County Public Works, drivers could have minor delays and should use an alternative route when possible.
As with most road projects, Fontecchio expects there to be a slight learning curve for motorists who frequent the area.
“It’s kind of that reality, you forget over the Fourth of July weekend and you drive into it Monday morning,” he says.
