ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) – An important piece of Brown County history has finally come down.
After removing some of the columns that held the old arena and given about two hours time, the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena fell to the ground on Wednesday.
Those overseeing the demolition project say that things have been going as planned, thus far.
“Everything went well, the crew was reactive and it went the way we thought it would go,” says. Miron Executive Project Manager Kurt Wolfgram.
The impact from the building collapsing sent a major cloud of dust into the air, which was expected.
“As a structure of that size comes down and it being a dry site, everything was expected which is why we had the fencing up and had the screening on the fence to try and contain everything,” he explains.
The rest of the roof is going to be taken down over the next few days, while the remaining concrete and metal will be hauled away to be reused and recycled.
“By the end of next week you won’t see much of the roof, you’ll only see the flooring,” said Wolfgram. “Over the next few months, we’ll be working on the underground utilities and the foundation and footing. The actual structure will probably go up in the Fall like October,” he says.
In fact, crews have already started laying the foundation to the new Brown County expo center.
Officials expect that venue to be ready to open by early 2021.
