OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Oshkosh Police Department lit up the night Thursday to support Special Olympics.
The department hosted a “Run with the Cops” event, which included a 5K race and mile run.
Police turned on their cop car lights as participants ran in the dark at the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh.
The department played into police stereotypes by handing out donuts at the finish line. Children could also be seen wearing fake mustaches as well.
“It’s really neat to come out and see community members in a different light,” said Chris Tarmann, Oshkosh acting chief of police. “This is an opportunity to grow organic relationships that ultimately, people understand us. We understand our community needs us. We build some trust, and then we ultimately use that to work together.”
Oshkosh police say they raised at least $25,000 Thursday. Over the years, they’ve raised $350,000 with this event.
