GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The weekends before and after Halloween tends to bring many out to area bars, and this weekend may be a good test run for a new system that was just put in place.
Green Bay Police say this weekend may be a good time to use the new Safe Park program. The program allows people to be able to leave their vehicles overnight instead of feeling forced to drive home under the influence to avoid a parking ticket.
Commander Kevin Warych of the Green Bay Police Department says they anticipate bars around Green Bay will be busy this weekend.
“Halloween tends to bring a lot more people out, especially in the downtown bar district.”
He says he hopes bartenders and bar owners act in a responsible way as well.
“We want to empower the bartenders and bar staff to be on the lookout for people who be impaired so that we can deter drunk driving.”
He says that can be done by handing people a voucher that will allow them to leave their vehicles parked overnight and encourage them to find a safe ride home.
“The bar owners can hand out these cards so people are exempt from the parking ordinance from 3:30 to 5:00 a.m.
He says they will be out making sure people are having fun and following the law and laws still apply even during costume parties.
“Just because you put a costume does not mean you can hide from all the laws.”
