APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Thanks to working smoke detectors, residents were able to quickly put out a fire coming from their dishwasher.
Appleton Fire was called to the home on Green Bay Court just after 11 p.m. last night.
Before firefighters arrived, residents put the fire out with a bucket of water.
Crews did help remove smoke from the home and check for any extension. The damage was limited to the dishwasher and a small portion of the countertop.
Lieutenant Steven Unruh says it why they preach the importance of having a working smoke detector.
“This is a great example of why we encourage everyone to test and maintain their smoke detectors. It is likely that, without the operable detectors, the fire would have had enough time to grow and cause significant damage and possibly injuries.”
It was later learned the dishwasher is part of a manufacturer’s recall.
This fire marks the first red bulb in Appleton Fire’s “Keep the Wreath Green” campaign.
