KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ) – Police are asking people on the southeast side of Kaukauna to watch out for a coyote that has been acting strangely in the area.
They say the animal has been reported in the 2100 block of Olde Country Circle, which is in the area of Eagle Links Golf Course.
It looks normal but does not appear to fear humans. Police want to make sure the coyote is not sick or injured and to make sure people and pets are safe.
“It’s not the first call. We have coyotes. They’re all over the place. People hear them. People see them, but I will say this is a unique thing, that we were able to get so close to it. Normally they’re pretty skittish,” says Kaukauana Assistant Police Chief Brad Sanderfoot.
Officers ask people in the area not to approach the coyote or feed it.
“Absolutely don’t feed it. It could be starting to get domesticated if people are feeding it. And if you see it, don’t approach it, because it’s still a wild animal,” Sanderfoot says.
Before letting pets out, people are advised to check their yards, especially under overhangs, and behind and under patio furniture and other structures it could lie behind.
The local Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Biologist says he’s aware of the sighting. He says there are no plans to actively search for the coyote, unless the animal causes problems. Police say if they don’t get any more calls, it could be coyote case closed.
“If he moves on then it would be the end of it . So we’ll see. Time will tell. Otherwise we’ll work with the DNR and see what our other options are,” says Sanderfoot.
Anyone who sees the coyote is asked to call police at (920) 766-6333.
