SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ) – Fire broke out around 1:00 AM Monday at an apartment complex in Shiocton.
The apartments are on the corner of Broad and Railroad streets.
When crews arrived they saw smoke and flames coming from the building.
Shiocton Fire Chief Butch Bunnell said many residents were displaced, but the exact number in not known.
“20 to 25. We didn’t get an accurate count because some of them jumped into cars.”
Bunnell said when they arrived on scene, they noticed that the smoke dectors were still going off.
“I think was saved the people from not being injured was that the smoke alarms were working.
There is smoke damage to the whole building.
“Upon arriving we found one apartment was engulfed in flames. We knocked it down but we had called other departments for backup and assistance.”
There’s is no word yet on how the fire started or a damage estimate.
Bunnell said many in the community expressed the desire to help those in need.
“The Chief of Police had opened the school up for the rest of the residents. That is where they met Red Cross. A few people asked where they can donate stuff too.”
The Salvation Army in Black Creek is taking donations for the displacements.
