NEW LONDON, WI (WTAQ)- Sturgeon Spawning is underway and moving fast.
From New London to Shiocton to Shawano, the sturgeon run has started, but Ryan Koening’s DNR Biologist says it may be over this weekend.
While you may be able to see the prehistoric fish swimming days after spawning at each location, what really is the treat to see happens at peak.
“The difference is the number of fish that are there, and the aggressiveness in terms of their movement.”
Spawning was taking place Monday in New London.
“Typically if you hear that the fish are active, you are going to want to get to that location within a day or two or you might miss it.”
Recent high waters of the Wolf River is not affecting the spawning too much.
“We still do have fish spawning on the rocks, so that is not going to have much of an impact.”
The DNR will also take fish out of the water to tag them during peak.
Shiocton will begin peak soon and activity will wrap up at the end of the week in Shawano.
DNR tagging will move to Shiocton and will wrap up in Shawano.
