OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Authorities have released the names of a sheriff’s deputy and a man he shot and killed during a confrontation last week in Oconto County.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice says Sgt. Jordan Longsine fatally shot Dakota Coleman, 27, on Highway 41 near Frog Pond Road on June 8.
State investigators say the incident began when several people called 911 to report a reckless driver on Highway 41. Longsine, a 17-year veteran of law enforcement, pulled the vehicle over, and the driver waved him over for help. While Longsine was helping the driver, who was severely injured, a passenger, armed with a knife, got out of the vehicle.
Investigators say Coleman, the passenger, approached Longsine and the driver. He ignored Longsine’s commands, and Longsine shot him. Coleman received first aid, but died at the scene.
The driver was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
No members of law enforcement were injured.
Longsine remains on investigative leave, as is the policy of the sheriff’s department.
DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting and will forward the results to the Oconto County district attorney’s office to determine whether charges should be filed.
