BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – The major Interstate 41 project in Brown County is entering the home stretch.
Wisconsin DOT officials say the $1.5 billion mega-project is scheduled to be completed this fall.
“Now, a lot of the work, it’s done. We’re on the last leg here. We can see the finish line,” Mark Kantola, Wisconsin Department of Transportation Regional Communications Manager, tells FOX 11.
Kantola says the I-41/43 interchange is one of the last pieces of the project puzzle.
“This is the biggest one, this is the highest one, those flyover ramps, you know, you’re going to be able to stay at speed when you’re going north and southbound 41 to 43. Which ever way you’re going you’ll be able to stay at speed,” he said.
Kantola says the 14-mile stretch of interstate in Brown County will be bigger and better than before.
“The main line project especially, it’s increased to six, eight lanes with some having the auxiliary lanes, so that traffic that doesn’t have to merge or it’s merging out of the mainline 41 traffic, is so much safer, and so much a better operation,” said Kantola.
Kantola says 56-inch concrete barriers will keep oncoming traffic separated.
“And they’ve been proven to work across the country, at limiting accidents on one side, when an accident already occurs on the other side,” he said.
The DOT scheduled its final informational hearing on the project Tuesday night in Green Bay.
