GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Thousands of people around state are picking up after a powerful line of storms ripped through Wednesday night.
Jim Malewski, from Green Bay, has lived in his house on Delray Drive since 2010. But after Wednesday night, he tells FOX 11 he may need to find a new one.
“All of a sudden, we’re down there less than five minutes, and you hear a boom. I mean a big boom, and then I heard glass shatter all over the place.”
About 10 minutes after the crash, Malewiski, his fiancé, and his dog then went upstairs to find a large oak tree on top of their house, ripping into it.
“Six months ago, we had a wind storm and a tree came down on the house. It barely hit the house though, it wasn’t like this. Wasn’t a big mess like this.”
Todd Pliner is just across the street, helping clean up his mom’s house.
He says the high winds knocked over a tree in the front yard, causing it to fall into the side of the garage.
“This limb had fallen right here and then I came here a little while later to get the generators hooked up. We got them hooked up and the other limb fell on the front side of the garage and crushed the generator.”
Pliner says the power has been out in the area since 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
“Everybody can’t have power tomorrow. It is what it is, it’ll get here.”
Hayden Schultz lives about a mile away, near John Muir Park.
“We went downstairs and nothing was really going on outside. Then about two minutes later, we heard a crash and then we came upstairs later and then there was a tree in my room.”
Two large trees fell, causing damage to the upstairs, and his neighbor’s friend’s car.
“We’ve had a lot of trees down around here” said Schultz. “But this is the first time ever it’s been remotely close to our house.”
The county advises drivers to observe posted road and street closures and avoid areas where storm damage has made travel dangerous.
County leaders are also urging those who have been without power for at least four hours to throw out perishable foods such as meat, fish, vegetables, eggs, and milk.
