GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Drivers with a vehicle registered in Green Bay will soon be paying more for their annual fee.
That’s because Green Bay’s city council agreed late Tuesday night to start collecting a $20 wheel tax.
The revenue is projected to pay for more than $2 million per year in road repairs.
As a result, special residential assessments in the city are being eliminated.
Those fees, which property owners pay when their road is redone, can often cost tens of thousands of dollars.
The vote was 10 to 2.
Alderman John VanderLeest tells FOX 11 he’s not on board.
“It should be right in our budget. To slap another wheel tax proposal forward for the citizens, I think it’s an injustice.”
“Where in the budget are you going to cut?” said Alderman Randy Scannell.
“And then do it every year. That is going to hurt.”
Steve Grenier, the city’s public works director, says the preliminary plan is to start collecting the tax at the beginning of 2019.
A formal resolution still needs to be passed for the tax to be collected.
That’s expected to happen next month.
