MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A private fund-raising effort is being done to raise money for an upgrade to the playground at Park Elementary School in Marinette.
The school district says it doesn’t have the money to pay to fix the playground, but many are not taking no for an answer.
Sarah Ahrndt runs a daycare across the street from Park Elementary.
“A lot of people use this park, not just the school. We use this park for our play during the summer,” said Ahrndt.
The school’s playground is one she visits often.
But the equipment, she says, has seen better days, “The rust, the paint chipping off, the equipment getting broken.”
School officials are working to change that.
“We’re trying to raise money to expand our playground area to give our students choices,” said Park Elementary Principal Beverly Schewe. “We want to engage all learners.”
Schewe says the hope is to turn the playground into an interactive learning area.
The school will host a work day where the community can help install new areas on Aug. 18.
“Additions we want to include, which would be a football area, soccer area,” she continued. “We want to do a bunch of painting on the grounds, the gaga pit, all of those extra additions we’re looking at $16,000.”
