TWO RIVERS, WI (WTAQ-WLUK)- Emergency crews were called to a fish market in Two Rivers for a building fire.
It happened Monday morning around 8:24 at Susie Q Fish Market.
Officials say extensive damage was caused inside.
The fire is believed to have started in the smokehouse of the building.
Employees were in the building when the fire started, but they were able to get out without injury.
Officials say the employees also attempted to put the fire out with extinguishers and garden hoses before the fire department arrived.
“It did get out of control,” said Pattie Kulpa. ” A lot of black smoke over my head.”
Kulpa has worked for the market for 25 years. The fish market is a staple for many in the community.
“Oh, everybody would be lost without Susie Q, everybody,” said neighbor Gerry Genrich.
City Manager Greg Buckley says he’s also reached out to the owners to let them know the community is rallying behind them.
“This is a significant business for our community not only economic impact and wholesale but also our history and our community identity,” said Buckley.
Genrich couldn’t believe it when she saw smoke coming from the roof.
