GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Now that traps have been handed out, the next steps are being taken to solve rat problems in the city.
Brown County Supervisor Pat Evans says part of the rat problem comes from absentee landlords and poor tenants, and that means the traps are just one piece of the puzzle.
“We want to continue to do the education and the traps. There has not been anything introduced yet into the city as far as an ordinance would go.”
Evans says people are fined more for lighting off fireworks than harboring rats.
Last weekend, rats traps that were purchased by the county were handed out to residents who stopped by the Neville Public Museum.
The County paid $5,000 dollars and will continue to make traps available, as long as they are doing the job.
“We felt this was an appropriate expenditure,” Evans said. “$5,000 dollars of a $200 million dollar budget does not impact the levy or anybody.”
Evans says follow-up is the next step.
“We will be in the neighborhoods walking and talking to people to get that effect.”
He says residents can still take steps to keep rats away.
Birdseed on the ground and dog feces are the two things rats are attracted to the most.
