ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ) – Packer fans had a chance to see their team on the field Tuesday.
Not Lambeau Field, Clarke Hinkle Field.
The Green and Gold held its second of ten OTA workouts, but it was the first one open to the public.
Fans lined the fence on Oneida Street to catch a climpse of some of the team’s new and returning players.
WTAQ caught up with some of those cheeseheads.
Despite him not being on the field due to collegiate class requirements at the University of Washington, Phil Gutting of Green Bay is especially excited about the Packers top draft choice, Cornerback Kevin King.
“Because he’s 6’3,” and we’re gonna have some height at the corner position.”
Don Christensen of Florence is enthused that after King, General Manager Ted Thompson stayed on the defensive side of the ball to select Safety Josh Jones, Defensive Tackle Montravius Adams, and Linebacker Vince Biegel.
“Probably the first four picks (that I’m most excited to see).”
Cathy Mohr of Fremont, Nebraska is a lifelong Packer fan and made her first trip to Titletown.
“I didn’t even know about the OTA’s until last night. I was so excited. We were going to leave today, but I said ‘we’ve gotta stop.’”
Mohr says the trip was originally planned around touring Lambeau Field.
She notes some high expectations for the Packers this season.
“I’m hoping that they make it back to the Super Bowl again.”
Christensen sees good things as well.
“At least as far as they did last year (to the NFC Championship game).”
Gutting started off skeptical but has gotten more optimistic in recent weeks.
“Actually, I had us going like 8-8, then after the draft, I’ve got us winning the division.”
Gutting says he was excited to see the OTA’s as it gives him a more recent image in his mind than the team’s 44-21 NFC Championship game loss in Atlanta.
“I was so mad at that game, I went outside and was chipping ice. I didn’t watch the second half. I was sipping Miller Lite and chipping ice.”
Additional open OTA’s are scheduled for June 1 and June 6.
