MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) – Evidence from Teresa Halbach’s 2005 murder has been sent to an Illinois testing lab for a forensic re-examination.
Manitowoc County Clerk of Courts officials say the items were shipped Monday and returned Tuesday.
Test results have not been filed, and no further information about the tests has been made available.
The Department of Justice requested the testing as Steven Avery appeals his conviction in the murder.
The case gained a worldwide following in 2015 due to the 10-part Netflix documentary ‘Making a Murderer.’
Avery’s nephew, Brendan Dassey, was also convicted in Halbach’s death.
His confession was tossed out by a judge last year, but the state appealed the ruling.
An appeals court in Chicago has yet to rule on the case.
