GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon will have a new route this year — utilizing the Mason Street bridge and more streets in Allouez — while eliminating use of the bridge in De Pere, but keeping the lap inside Lambeau Field just before the finish.
The May 15 event will be in-person, after being virtual for the last two years because of the coronavirus pandemic. Registration is now open, and continues until the day before the race.
The multiple changes for the route are due to efforts to have more of the race centered around the stadium district, and eliminate some areas with flooding issues, said race operations director, Ryan Griessmeyer.
“It’s just a revamp of how to use the stadium district and get the businesses and Lambeau all involved in what should be an amazing event again this year,” Griessmeyer said.
The route previously went south from the stadium, crossed the river in De Pere, and headed north along the Fox River Trail. But with the new route around the stadium, they “ran out of real estate” to use De Pere, so more Allouez streets will be used, he said.
Also, the Tilleman Bridge on Mason Street will be used for the first time. Runners will use the east bound lanes, while it will be open for motorists west-bound traffic only the day of the full marathon.
The route itself will be more participant and spectator friendly, and the elevation changes should be comparable, Griessmeyer said.
