FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Warm weather and rains have made the ice of Lake Winnebago unsafe for recreational activities, Fond du Lac fire and rescue officials warn.
The announcement comes after a UTV fell through the ice Thursday night.
Crews say they were called to Lake Winnebago off the Garden Drive landing, near Lakeside Park just before 7 p.m. First responders discovered several people standing next to the UTV, trying to remove it from water three to four feet deep. The temperature was 54 degrees.
As the people refused to leave the ice and firefighters determined no one’s life was in danger, rescuers cleared the scene while sheriff’s deputies remained.
Rescue crews say where the UTV went through the ice, there were no visible cracks or hazards. Crews reported sagging under their feet as well as honeycombing of the ice, which is a sign of melting.
Fire/Rescue says the ice in many areas cannot support the weight of a person, let alone a vehicle.
