GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A man not charged with fatally shooting a woman pleaded not guilty Friday to allegedly illegally carrying a concealed weapon without a permit at the time.
Jaylene Edwards was not charged in connection with the Nov. 14 shooting of Dominique Wilson outside an east side convenience store after prosecutors determined it was self-defense.
Edwards was not required to appear in court Friday because it is a misdemeanor charge, and did not do so. His attorney entered the not guilty plea. No future court date was set because the case will need to be assigned to a different judge because of a personal conflict in the case.
On Jan. 14, Brown County District Attorney David Lasee said in a news release that Wilson went to her vehicle and got a loaded handgun. Surveillance video showed her pointing the gun at others nearby and trying to fire it at people who were fighting. While this was going on, Edwards, who was there with friends and family members, shot and killed Wilson. Edwards said he shot Wilson out of fear she would start shooting everyone else.
According to the criminal complaint, after the shooting, police asked Edwards about the Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun.
“Edwards indicated he bought it two weeks ago off the streets of Milwaukee and that he bought it for protection. Edwards stated the gun was on his right hip and was concealed under his coat. Edwards stated he does not have a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit,” the complaint states.
If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $10,000 and not more than nine months in jail.
