GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – It’s spring break time, and people are flocking to Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport to take flight to warmer destinations.
The airport is getting busier this weekend, which means it could take a bit longer than usual to check in and clear TSA checkpoints. Airport Director Marty Piette says even though GRB is relatively small, you should still give yourself plenty of time.
“Everybody’s trying to get out of town and visit some of those warm weather destinations that we have added over the last several months. This has been really busy, so we just wanted to remind everybody of a few tips,” Piette told WTAQ News. “You still need to be out here about an hour and a half ahead of your flight. Make sure that you’ve got enough time to check your bag if you need to do that, to get through the security screening process, maybe grab a snack at the restaurant, and then find your gate.”
Between right now and mid-April is one of GRB’s busiest times of the year. Piette says they’re seeing well over a thousand people a day going through screening checkpoints.
“Prepare yourself. Make sure you’re following the airline recommendations. Go to the TSA’s website to find out what’s prohibited and what’s allowed. Make sure that you’ve packed everything properly so that get through as quickly as you can,” Piette said. “Maybe pack some snacks, bring a book along with you. A lot of other airports still, even the larger ones, some of the concession areas are not open, their restaurants may not be open – and even if they are, they might have limited menus.”
Meanwhile, federal COVID guidelines for air travel have been extended into April, including the mask mandate for airports and planes. Piette says to take a look at the requirements for your destination as well, as they could be different – especially if you’re leaving the country.
“Find out what the COVID-19 policies are [at your destination]. Make sure that you’re following that protocol, make sure that you got everything in order. That way, you’re spending less time in line and more time at the beach,” Piette said.
To make getting through TSA smoother, travelers are reminded:
– Liquids (gels and aerosols) are limited to 3.4 oz. each and should all be placed in a clear,
quart bag. The exception is hand sanitizer, which has a 12 oz. limit. Keep this in mind, TSA
says if you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it or pour it, then the carry-on quantity is
limited.
– Leave prohibited items at home. This includes firearms.
