GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Fire officials say children playing with a cigarette lighter caused a house fire on Green Bay’s east side.
Firefighters were called to the two-story home, at 1260 St. Clair Street, just after 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Authorities say the kids were playing with the lighter and lit paper and a mattress on fire in the backyard of the house. The mattress and other combustibles were against the home, which caused the flames to spread to the siding and into the rear wall and attic of the home.
No one was injured, and five people were displaced. Fire officials estimate damage to be about $15,000.
