WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) – Shipbuilders in northeast Wisconsin will have their next Navy boat named in honor of Minnesota’s Twin Cities.
The Pentagon says the next littoral combat ship built at Marinette Marine will be named the USS Minneapolis-St. Paul.
It’s the second ship to be named in honor of Minnesota’s largest cities. The first was a submarine commissioned in 1984.
Lockheed Martin at Marinette will oversee construction of the 388-foot long ship. It’s designed to find enemy explosive mines and anti-submarine devices.
It can travel at speeds up to 40 knots.
