WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) – A 24-year-old woman is in jail, after she allegedly drove drunk and landed in the Wisconsin River while trying to run from police in Wausau.
Authorities say the Green Bay woman was driving the wrong way on a one-way street about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Officers say they pulled the car over — and once it stopped, the woman got out and either ran or fell down an embankment into the river. She allegedly tried swimming away from the police — but rescuers had to pull her to safety about 10 minutes later.
The woman was taken to a hospital before going to jail for violating a previous probation.
Besides the wrong-way driving ticket, the woman faces a possible charge of two-time drunk driving.
