GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A lack of available staff may lead to remote learning for some Green Bay schools.
In a letter sent to families and staff Tuesday, the Green Bay Area Public School District said it is “experiencing staff shortages due to an increase in staff experiencing COVID-19 symptoms after Winter Recess.” A “lack of COVID-19 testing options and delays in test results” are complicating the situation.
While it is committed to in-person learning, the district says it must ensure it is able to provide a safe learning environment for students. But because of a “critical staff shortage,” the district wants families and staff to be prepared if it needs to move a school to virtual learning.
The following will be done if a school must transition to remote learning:
Families and staff will be notified by 9:00 p.m. in the evening if school will be moving to virtual learning the next day. We are asking staff to call in their absences as soon as possible, so that we can provide notice to families the night before, rather than making a decision in the morning.
The District will announce the move to virtual learning by sending an email, automated call, and text message to families and staff. Information will also be posted on District/school social media sites and District/school websites. In addition, the District will also notify local media.
Schools will move to virtual learning with a goal of returning to in-person after three days. The District will make a decision that reduces the possibility of schools toggling back and forth between in-person and virtual learning.
The first day of virtual learning will be an asynchronous learning day, meaning that students will be working independently and teachers will have time to readjust their lesson plans for virtual learning with live instruction.
Meal pick-up will be available during the days of virtual instruction.
Scheduled co-curriculars at the middle and high schools will continue unless otherwise communicated.
The district says it appreciates the understanding of families and staff as it continues to navigate the changing circumstances surrounding COVID-19.
