GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The 2021 gun deer season is in the books in Wisconsin, and officials say numbers are down compared to last year.
Hunters killed nearly 15,000 fewer deer this year than last. Hunters took,84,952 antlered deer, a 1.3% drop from last season, and 90,715 antlerless deer, a 13.2% drop from last season.
Overall, it’s a 7.9% drop from the 2020 season.
Jeff Pritzl with the DNR says that’s in spite of generally pleasant hunting conditions.
“Really the only difficult time, I think, was that Sunday afternoon,” Pritzl said of the wind and and rain that punctuated the first Sunday of the season. “There were a few more windier days that some people may prefer not hunt, but there are others that adapted to that.”
Overall license sales dropped by around 1.3% after a large jump in 2020. The muzzleloader and bow hunting deer seasons continue. Pritzl says a lot of people are participating in those.
