OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Oshkosh parents who do not want their children to wear masks at school disrupted the start of a school board meeting Wednesday evening, causing it to be postponed.
Arguing between parents and board members broke out after some of the parents refused to wear masks.
School board members and police asked people to leave the meeting who refused to put on a mask, but those people refused to leave the meeting area.
The meeting started an hour after an anti-mask protest started outside the building where the meeting was held.
There were members of the public both for and against masks at the meeting.
“I’m not worried about this disruption, I’m worried about the message it sends to the community,” said Bob Poeschl, the president of the school board.
“That if you’re uncomfortable with something like this, that you can come and disrupt public works, that are taking place. Our goal is to put students first.”
“We sent, I think, a very strong message that we the parents are not going to back off,” said Kristy Walsh, a parent. “They work for us, so we’re going to keep coming back, and if they don’t hold another meeting, we are going to replace them.”
Last Friday, the district announced face masks would be required in Oshkosh schools after releasing a plan two weeks earlier that did not include a face mask requirement.
A new meeting date has not been set.
