SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ) – The NEW Zoo & Adventure Park is excited to announce the arrival of Nigel, our new nine-year-old male reticulated giraffe.
Nigel traveled from the Erie Zoo in Pennsylvania to Green Bay in a specially designed giraffe trailer that requires 14-foot clearance.
The giraffe was monitored constantly during the transport via a camera feed from the trailer. Prior to the move, Zookeeper Shannon Scanlan spent several days at the Erie Zoo to meet Nigel and the people who know him best.
Working with Nigel and his Keepers gave Shannon the opportunity to get to know him and to understand his routine.
Continuity of care will help Nigel be comfortable in his new home, and we hope that having a familiar face to greet him made his transition easier.
It’s expected Nigel and Zuri will also develop a close relationship, and there have been signs that a bond between them is already forming.
The Giraffe Feeding Experience will be closed today through Friday, November 1st, while Nigel and Zuri continue to get to know one another, but the Zoo is planning to make Nigel’s public debut on Saturday, November 2nd.
The Giraffe Feeding Experience will be open daily (November through March) from 10:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and again from 1:15 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Besides the arrival of Nigel, effective Friday, November 1st, the NEW Zoo hours of operation will change to the winter schedule.
Hours will be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. The NEW Zoo will remain open seven days a week, including holidays.
