OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Winnebago County Drug and Alcohol Coalition received a grant to help with substance abuse prevention.
For the departments and people who make up the coalition, being awarded $625,000 makes them proud.
“We’re all pumped. I mean, it’s a good chunk of money that’s going to help us do the things that we’re already working on in a better capacity and also focus in on areas where our data is leading us,” said Capt. Chris Tarmann.
He works for UW-Oshkosh police and is part of the coalition. Tarmann tells FOX 11 some grant money will be used in Oshkosh to target alcohol and marijuana use specifically among high school-aged children.
“We know that youth start using those two substances young and that ultimately helps us determine where are they going to get to with other uses of drugs.”
He adds the grant will allow room for a full-time position within the coalition.
“It’s based around developing some education, connecting our education to our youth leaders, engaging more youth in this coalition.”
When it comes to tackling alcohol abuse, community health strategist Stephanie Gyldenvand tells FOX 11 about the ways the grant can help. For example, spending time to find out how many liquor licenses are allowed in a community.
“And the density of that liquor license and also where they’re located. So, a difference between a business district or a residential area. Really shows the access, especially the youth to alcohol.”
She adds that the grant will also help identify if there are other substance abuse problems so the coalition can work on preventable measures.
