FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A jury acquitted a man of the most serious charges in connection with a Feb. 25 shooting, but convicted him on five other counts.
Mohamed Elmhdati, 26, was convicted of first-degree reckless injury, aggravated battery, reckless injury, intentionally pointing a firearm at a person, reckless endangering safety, and firing a weapon within 100 yards of a building.
The jury acquitted him Wednesday of attempted homicide, and armed robbery, court records show.
Sentencing is scheduled for April 15.
According to a criminal complaint, Elmhdati was dating the mother of the victim’s child. The victim told police Elmhdati had been receiving packages at his girlfriend’s mother’s house. The victim believed the packages contained drugs. The victim told police he set up a meeting with Elmhdati. When the victim arrived, he said Elmhdati demanded a package. When the victim told Elmhdati he didn’t have it, Elmhdati shot him in the leg.
Elmhdati told police a different version, according to the criminal complaint. Elmhdati said the victim had been harassing him. When they crossed paths, Elmhdati said he pulled out his gun to protect himself. Elmhdati told police the victim grabbed for the gun, and during a struggle, the gun went off.
Elmhdati told police he ran away because he did not think anyone would believe his story.
