APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The city of Appleton is asked to go pink in honor of a child who was tragically taken from her family and friends last month.
Three-year-old Zyana Corbin was killed by her mother’s boyfriend on Feb. 26. The suspect, Demetrius Williams, also stabbed and wounded Zyana’s mother, who is pregnant with his child.
To show support for her family friends on the day she is laid to rest, the community is asked to wear pink Tuesday, Zyana’s favorite color.
The police department says it will also change its lighting outside of the station to pink for the next several nights.
The lights in Houdini Plaza and at the Fox Cities Exposition Center will also be changed to pink in her honor.
You can also show your support on social media, using the hashtag #pinkforZyana.
In a statement released by Appleton Police, it reads in part:
“There are wicked things that occur in this world that none of us can understand, but when they happen we need to come together to support each other and those who are hurting. Our thoughts and prayers are first and foremost with her family, but they are also with the others who are struggling with this tragedy including her neighbors and friends, our first responders and hospital staff, and our community members who may have also suffered the loss of a child.”
The police also released an excerpt from Zyana’s obitutary:
“Zyana was a loving, sweet and genuinely happy child that enjoyed being around her family. Our child enjoyed watching Peppa Pig, Dora the Explorer, reading and dancing. Zyana had dreams of becoming a ballerina and Doctor. She loved to help her mom cook and playing at the playground with other kids, making them happy.
Zyana loved to wear colors when she got dressed for her day, but her favorite color to wear was pink. She was always concerned about her family and wanted to brighten up their day.”
The family is accepting monetary donations toward Zyana’s funeral on GoFundMe.
