CRIVITZ, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The 2020 gun deer hunting season is over.
Final numbers aren’t in, but opening weekend did see a 2% increase in deer taken.
More people hunting and good weather during the nine-day season are being credited with this year’s success.
“A doe came walking up the path and stopped to eat some nuts and once it saw me it wanted to take off, so I fired at it and got it,” Tim Buus said of his kill.
“It seems like they come out to graze in the field and they’re not real shy about getting shot,” Craig Schueller said.
“[I] had a couple of them trotting across the field about 4 o’clock yesterday,” Ann Schueller said. “So I took the big one and brought her in today.”
Ann brought it in to Pelkin’s Smokey Meat Market in Crivitz, where they have their work cut out for them. Dennis Pelkin is the owner, and his record haul for a year was about 1,800 deer in 2018.
“Oh I’ll probably hit the 2,000 mark this year,” Pelkin said. “This season is going to be a record year, I believe because with more people out in the woods, [because of the] COVID pandemic going on, more people are hunting and the deer are moving around and it’s been great weather. It’s been extremely busy, I’ll probably be cutting deer for at least two weeks or more, and we’ll be making sausage probably until March or April.”
