GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — A string of auto burglaries over the weekend in have Green Bay police issuing another warning.
Police are investigating two burglaries near Perkins Park on Sunday morning and several more from Saturday night near King Elementary School.
“The suspects will go from car to car to see which cars are open,” explained Police Commander Kevin Warych. “Then rummage through the car to take anything of value and then go on to the next car.”
Detering such crime, Warych says, is easy.
“Lock your car. Put a light on,” Warych says. “Illuminate your car…to really deter criminal activity. We really don’t want to see this pattern continuing.”
Don’t think that by locking you’re car you’re encouraging thieves to smash your windows in, either. While that does happen occasionally, Warych says satistically speaking, the best thing you can do is lock your door.
“If you lock your car, odds are that suspect is going to pull on the handle, see it’s locked, and then go on to the next car,” Warych said. “There are so many unlocked cars with which they don’t have to break a window and draw attention to themselves.”
Warych says such thefts have a tendency to increase during the holiday season as people may be keeping gifts in the backseat of their cars.
