GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Next Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day, and after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Friday night, even more could be on the line in the upcoming election.
Ginsburg’s death may bring new life to an already contentious election.
“I’m excited and I’m nervous,” voter Sarah Holloway said. “I’m ready to just cast my vote and it be out of my hands. Because every day there’s more news, there’s more things going on, it’s all building up to this.”
Holloway tells FOX 11 she got her mail-in ballot Friday.
“With the passing, it really does kind of [put] the future in our hands. With a new Supreme Court Justice, they can last for 30 years, just like R.B.G.”
Matthew Witterholt thinks Ginsburg’s death may actually reduce voter turnout.
“Some people were only excited for Joe Biden because they didn’t want a conservative to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the court,” Witterholt said. “Now they have less of a reason to be excited for Joe Biden.”
To clarify, FOX 11 asked Witterholt if he thought Ginsburg’s seat would be filled before the election.
“They’re going to try really hard,” he replied.
“It’s a tragedy that a Supreme Court Justice passed away. And this might get more people engaged now,” H. James Smet said.
At a drive-up voter registration event — put on by the Coalition of Voting Organizations of Brown County — people were able to get ready to vote and request absentee ballots.
The event on Monroe Avenue in downtown Green Bay is going on each Saturday and Sunday through Octtober 11th.
“There could be a language barrier, we do have people that we could call for translation,” H. James Smet said. “Voting is confusing to some people, so we want to make sure it’s easy and safe for everyone.”
The voting information event didn’t see much traffic while FOX 11 was there, one day after Ginsburg’s death, and 45 days until Nov. 3.
Green Bay plans to have 16 polling locations, open from 7 AM to 8 PM on election day.
