KENOSHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Activists and Law Enforcement alike from Northeast Wisconsin are in Kenosha this week.
That city was gripped by three nights of violence this week after the police shooting of a black man on Sunday.
Rainnee Laurence, who traveled to the area along with Jamie Crawford, are both from Northeast Wisconsin and are participating in protests downstate.
“It was like a warzone,” Laurence said of the violence in the city.
“I don’t think it’s really my place to destroy. I don’t disagree either because I do understand why the people in this city are angry,” said Crawford, “the people in Kenosha are very angry with what’s going on.”
Some law enforcement agencies from across the state have sent officers and deputies to Kenosha to assist with policing activities there.
Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office has sent 20 deputies. Something Sheriff John Matz says is difficult, especially after two protesters were shot and killed.
“It’s a bit sporadic, we try to do the best we can to stay in contact and they let me know what’s happening on the ground and what they’re doing, making sure they’re safe,” said Matz.
He wants protesters to understand one thing.
“You have the right to protest and demonstrate, but you don’t have the right to destroy people’s property or to place their lives or safety in danger,” said Matz.
Sheriff Matz says more Winnebago County deputies will head to Kenosha this week.
