GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — UW-Green Bay didn’t get to have their commencement. Not their usual one anyway. That was rectified over the weekend as cars drove by, honking their horns in celebration in a drive-through commencement ceremony.
“You dream of this day for four years, or for even longer than that maybe, then COVID came through and we didn’t know if this was even going to happen,” supply chain graduate Andrew Willems said. “So, the fact that we’re here, were doing it, that to me is what makes it the most special.”
Saturday’s celebration was supposed to happen back in May… but some things are sweeter the longer you wait for them.
“Everybody’s wearing masks, everybody is distanced, so it’s really different,” Bob Howe, the chair of the Biology department said. “There’s been a steady stream of cars coming across, and I’m really happy that so many students decided to take part in this.”
About 200 of 900 eligible students came through. Another plus of the drive-through ceremony was that graduates didn’t have to sit around and wait as long as they might have at a traditional ceremony.
