GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Jury selection started Friday morning at the KI Convention Center for the double-murder trial of Jacob Cayer.
Cayer allegedly killed Sabrina Teague and Heesun ‘Sunny’ Teague at a Hobart home on June 7, 2016. Joel Kennedy was also stabbed in the incident. Cayer has pleaded not guilty, and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
The trial has been delayed five times due to Cayer’s competency issues, and once because in-person court hearings were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brown County is renting the convention center because none of the courtrooms are large enough to socially distance the pools of 50, 100, or in Cayer’s case, 150 prospective jurors. Also, four of the county’s courtrooms have been modified with a variety of plexiglass barriers for safety.
Cayer’s trial will be held at the courthouse. A total of 14 jurors – 12 jurors and two alternates – will be seated at Friday’s hearing.
The trial is expected to last one week.
