DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – An area Army veteran received a special honor Thursday.
Eighth District Congressman Mike Gallagher presented John Roes with the Southwest Asia Service Medal, One Bronze Star.
Roes received the honor while serving in the Gulf War.
He planned to join his local VFW, but after going through his records, it was discovered he was missing the well-deserved medal.
The veteran’s office helped connect him to Gallagher’s staff, and they tracked down the medal.
Roes tells FOX 11 he’s humbled by Thursday’s ceremony.
“It is an honor, you know. I could do without it. But it shows a little respect. I have the respect for the Army, and it’s a good way to show that people love to serve and love what they do in he time of need.”
Roes served 20 years in the Army.
He says the friendships he made with fellow service members will always be special to him.
