BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – It’s a transportation project that has been talked about for more than 50 years. Now, a new bridge to better connect Green Bay’s southwest suburbs with the Fox Cities is closer than ever to finally getting built.
The Southern Bridge Connector would cross the Fox River between Wrightstown and De Pere. Brown County leaders have wanted this to happen for decades.
Interim Director of Brown County Planning and Land services, Cole Runge, tells FOX 11….
“we’re at the point now where we’ve identified a location for a new bridge across the Fox River and possibly a new interchange at interstate 41 and connect all the way across.”
Project organizers have narrowed the location down to two, but the preferred location is to connect Red Maple Road to Rockland Road.
The other possibility is about a mile north, connecting Scheuring and Heritage road.
A public hearing on Wednesday gave neighbors, like Dennis Carr, a chance to share their thoughts, and learn more.
“How it would impact us is probably a lot of noise a lot of traffic, that would be the most significant.”
However, Carr doesn’t mind.
“I’m sold on the bridge… even though it’s a block away from our house, I’m sold on it.”
Runge said, “one of the goals we’ve had throughout this process is to minimize the impact on existing businesses and residences. We’re not talking about a major highway here…. Something that fits the existing landscape.”
Both plans would require the county to buy homes and businesses near the bridge site.
Project leaders say the Red Maple to Rockland proposal impacts fewer properties, but more people who live at those properties.
The final bridge site choice still needs federal approval.
