(WISCONSIN TIMBER RATTLERS) BELOIT, WI – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Beloit Sky Carp 4-2 on Tuesday night at ABC Supply Stadium. On a night where all six runs scored on home runs, it was Sawyer Strosnider’s eighth-inning, two-run blast that broke a 2-2 tie and decided the game in favor of the Rattlers.
The newest Wisconsin Timber Rattler gave the Rattlers a 2-0 lead on the first pitch he saw. There were two outs with none on base in the top of the first. Eric Bitonti, the reigning Midwest League player of the week, smacked a single to center to keep the inning alive. Juan Ortuño, who joined the team on Monday, hit the first pitch of his first at bat in the Midwest League over the wall in left for a two-run home run.
Beloit (63-63 overall, 36-25 second half) used two solo homers to tie the game. Chase Jaworsky got the Sky Carp on the board with a one-out home run in the second. Brian Sanchez evened the score with a lead-off homer in the third. Later in the inning, the Sky Carp loaded the bases on an error, a single, and a walk.
Neither starter budged after that.
Ethan Dorchies, the Wisconsin starter, went five innings, allowed four hits, walked two, and struck out six.
Liomar Martinez, the Sky Carp starter, allowed two base runners to the Rattlers after the homer by Ortuño. Martinez walked one, hit a batter, and struck out seven.
The Sky Carp had chances in the sixth and seventh inning against Wisconsin reliever Tanner Perry. Jaworsky walked with one out in the sixth before stealing second and third. Perry ended the threat with a strikeout and a grounder to short.
In the seventh, the first two Beloit hitters singled. Perry shut the Sky Carp down on a strikeout and a 4-6-3 double play.
Wisconsin 66-56, 32-28) got to Beloit reliever Michael Perez in the eighth. Yannic Walther drew a four-pitch walk with one out. Strosnider lined a 1-2 pitch high and deep to right for a two-run home run and a 4-2 lead.
Bjorn Johnson, the third Rattlers pitcher of the night, allowed the lead-off batter to reach in both the eighth and ninth inning, but the Sky Carp were unable to get a rally going after that. Johnson closed out the game for his third save of the season.
Game two of the series is set for Tuesday night at ABC Supply Stadium. Miqueas Mercedes will make his Timber Rattlers debut as the starting pitcher. Brayan Mendoza (4-6, 6.09) is the announced starter for the Sky Carp. Game time is 6:05pm.
