(MARQUETTE COMMUNICATIONS) DEKALB, ILL – The Marquette University men’s soccer team scored twice in each half and erased a brief Northern Illinois comeback Thursday night, defeating NIU, 4-2, at the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Golden Eagles improved to 2-0-1 on the season behind a brace from freshman forward Tomiwa Adewumi and second-half tallies from Mads Konrad Horgøien and Joey Buchanan.
Marquette wasted little time getting on the board as Adewumi finished a chance in the fourth minute off assists from Konrad Horgøien and Mateo Stoka. Just 2:40 later, Adewumi struck again, converting a setup from Emilio Maldonado Frei to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 advantage less than six minutes into the contest.
The Huskies responded midway through the opening half as Luka Vasic scored in the 14th and 25th minutes, knotting the match at 2-2 before halftime.
Marquette regained control in the second half.
Konrad Horgøien broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, finishing a pass from Adewumi to restore the Golden Eagles’ lead at 3-2. Buchanan then provided an insurance goal in the 84th minute, scoring off a feed from Stoka.
Stoka recorded two assists for Marquette, while Adewumi posted a five-point night with two goals and an assist. Konrad Horgøien added a goal and an assist in the victory.
