(UW ATHLETICS) MADISON – The Wisconsin women’s soccer team drew with Marquette, 1-1, Sunday at McClimon Soccer Complex.
Today’s game attendance of 1,327 was the second-best attended game at McClimon since 2001.
How it Happened
Marquette recorded the first shot of the match in the seventh minute, but Wisconsin responded in the 13th when Anya Gulbrandsen had an attempt blocked.
Wisconsin threatened twice in the 38th minute. Margaret Sisk had an attempt blocked before Erin Connolly put a shot toward the bottom-left corner, forcing Marquette goalkeeper Mia Hurd to make the save. Drew Stover answered on the other end just over a minute later, stopping Haley Christianson’s attempt.
The Badgers made one final push before the break. Abby Ballek put a shot on frame in the 45th minute that Hurd turned away, and Kiara Gilmore followed with another attempt as time expired.
Wisconsin headed into halftime with a 6-2 advantage in shots (6-2) and an edge in shots on goal (2-1). Stover recorded one save, while Hurd made two for the Golden Eagles.
Second Half
Wisconsin came out attacking after the break, recording three shots in the opening six minutes. Jenna Baumann put the first on frame in the 51st minute, forcing Hurd to make the save.
The Badgers finally broke through in the 67th minute. After a foul was called on Marquette goalkeeper Mia Hurd, Wisconsin was awarded a penalty kick. Connolly stepped to the spot and buried her attempt into the bottom-left corner to put Wisconsin ahead, 1-0.
Marquette responded in the 79th minute when Kaylie Sheehan found the bottom-right corner to even the match at 1-1. Wisconsin quickly looked to regain the advantage, with Jenna Baumann putting a shot on goal in the 81st minute, but Hurd made the save.
The Badgers continued to push in the closing minutes, earning corner kicks in the 83rd and 87th minutes. Gilmore recorded Wisconsin’s final shot of the match following the latter, but her attempt went wide as the teams finished even at 1-1.
Wisconsin finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots, a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Stover recorded two saves, while Hurd made five for Marquette.
