(GREEN BAY ATHLETICS) GRAND FORKS, N.D. – After falling behind 1-0 in the second half, the Green Bay women’s soccer team rallied, scoring two unanswered goals to take down North Dakota on the road Sunday. With the win, the Phoenix is off to a 2-0-0 start for the first time since 2022.
“Sunday road games in college soccer are very tough…we dominated the first half and unfortunately didn’t put away our chances,” said head coach Matt Kagan. “At this level, if you lose focus, teams will punish you, and that’s what happened when we gave up the goal on a set piece…but what I am most proud of is our response. We scored two outstanding goals and found a way to close the match out!”
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix controlled the pace of this one in the first half, taking seven shots, four on goal. On the other end, the GB defense locked down its half of the field, not allowing the hosts a single shot in the first 45 minutes.
Shortly after the start of the second half, North Dakota broke the 0-0 tie when Hunter Borgel scored in the 49th minute on the team’s first shot of the game. The Phoenix responded well to adversity, levelling the game with a goal from Laney Stark — her second of the season — in the 64th minute. It would be 17 minutes before the Phoenix found its winner, when Senah Hanes’ 81st-minute goal put GB ahead for good. Hanes now has three goals in two games this season.
GAME NOTES
- Green Bay received one yellow card (Grace Downey), while North Dakota had four.
